Of the two hermitages that Valjunquera has, the hermitage of Santa Bárbara is the oldest. The one located on a hill from where you can see the entire population.
It is a small Renaissance-style building on the outside, with baroque decoration and solutions on the inside. Its floor plan is rectangular with a straight head and an entrance portico at the foot with a semicircular arch on two of the walls. On the third wall, the lintel of what was the access door to the hermit's house attached to the building opens and of which only this opening and a pipe excavated in the rock are preserved.
The exterior cover stands out for the use of large stone slabs. Inside, the vault is barrel-vaulted in its first section and with a large ribbed vault in the presbytery whose ribs rest on decorated corbels.
This hermitage was built in the 17th century. The date 1616 is inscribed on the keystone of the access arch, as well as a coat of arms (that of the family that probably paid for it) and the word “AVIEGO”. Inside, in the presbytery, there are remains of paintings dated 1766.
The hermitage was restored voluntarily by a group of local people. They themselves promoted the organization in the hermitage of the festival of San Cristóbal (patron saint of drivers), in the month of July, during which the blessing of the vehicles is carried out.
