%3Cb%3EHISTORY%20OF%20THE%20BOGDANIEC%20COMMUNE%20-%20click%20and%20find%20out%20more%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cdiv%20title%3D%22Page%206%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%C2%A0%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20history%20of%20the%20Bogdaniec%20commune%20is%20connected%20to%20the%20history%20of%20the%20lower%20Warta%20River%20Valley%2C%20which%20stretches%20from%20Santok%20to%20Kostrzyn%2C%20where%20the%20Warta%20River%20flows%20into%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0Athe%20Odra%20River.%20The%20width%20of%20the%20valley%20in%20the%20Bogdaniec%20area%20is%20over%207%20kilometres%2C%20the%20height%20above%20sea%20level%20varies%20between%2015%20and%2018%20metres.%20The%20hills%20in%20the%20northern%20part%2C%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0Anear%20the%20village%20of%20Stanowice%2C%20reach%20a%20height%20of%20140%20metres%20above%20sea%20level.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cdiv%20title%3D%22Page%206%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20oldest%20recorded%20archaeological%20traces%20of%20settlement%20in%20the%20area%20of%20the%20Bogdaniec%20commune%20are%20associated%20with%20Stone%20Age%20hunt-%20ergatherers%20who%20penetrated%20the%20area%20in%20pursuit%20of%20reindeer%20after%20the%20receding%20of%20the%20ice%20sheet%20around%2013000%20BC.%20During%20the%20Neolithic%20period%20of%20the%20Stone%20Age%2C%20the%20first%20agricultural%20cultures%20appeared%20in%20the%20lower%20Warta%20River%20area%3B%20they%20preferred%20a%20settled%20lifestyle%20and%20were%20associated%20with%20the%20people%20of%20the%20Funnelbeaker%20culture%20and%20the%20Globular%20Amphora%20culture%2C%20as%20evidenced%20by%20traces%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0Aof%20settlement%20discovered%20during%20surface%20archaeological%20excavations.%20Traces%20of%20settlement%20from%20the%20Bronze%20Age%20and%20the%20beginning%20of%20the%20Iron%20Age%20are%20much%20better%20identified%20and%20documented%2C%20mainly%20on%20the%20basis%20of%20relics%20left%20by%20the%20people%20of%20the%20Lusatian%20culture.%20Among%20the%20numerous%20archaeological%20sites%20from%20this%20period%2C%20the%20following%20places%2C%20explored%20in%20the%201970s%2C%20deserve%20attention%3A%20the%20cremation%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cdiv%20title%3D%22Page%207%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cp%3Eburial%20ground%20from%20%C5%81upo%CC%81w%2C%20single%20cremation%20burial%20graves%20from%20Jenin%20and%20Bogdaniec%2C%20and%20the%20bronze%20treasure%20from%20%C5%81upo%CC%81w%2C%20discovered%20in%202021.%20In%20the%20early%20Middle%20Ages%2C%20the%20area%20of%20the%20present%20Bogdaniec%20commune%20was%20originally%20part%20of%20the%20early%20Piast%20state%20and%20then%20of%20the%20Santock%20castellany.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cdiv%20title%3D%22Page%207%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20most%20numerous%20remnants%20of%20Slavic%20settlement%20were%20found%20in%20the%20areas%20of%20today%E2%80%99s%20Jenin%2C%20%C5%81upo%CC%81w%2C%20Motylewo%20and%20Chwa%C5%82owice.%20As%20early%20as%201278%2C%20the%20names%20of%20Jenin%20%28Jenyn%29%20and%20%C5%81upo%CC%81w%20%28Loppowe%29%2C%20presumably%20preserved%20from%20prehis-%20toric%20times%2C%20appeared%20in%20written%20sources%2C%20marking%20the%20beginning%20of%20the%20next%20stage%20in%20the%20history%20of%20the%20region%2C%20associated%20with%20German%20colonisation%20within%20the%20Brandenburg%20New%20March.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cdiv%20title%3D%22Page%208%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20mass%20settlement%20of%20the%20lower%20Warta%20River%20Valley%20is%20related%20to%20the%20so-called%20Holla%CC%88nder%20settlement.%20In%201686%2C%20with%20the%20permission%20of%20the%20Council%20of%20Landsberg%20%28today%E2%80%99s%20Gorzo%CC%81w%29%2C%20three%20Holla%CC%88nders%3A%20Bru%CC%88der%20Jakob%2C%20Gu%CC%88rge%20Rabe%2C%20Har%20Bose%2C%20founded%20the%20Landsberger%20Holla%CC%88nder%20colony%20%28today%E2%80%99s%20Chwa%C5%82owice%29%20on%20what%20is%20now%20known%20as%20B%C5%82ota%20Wieprzyckie.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cp%3EHowever%2C%20the%20first%20serious%20efforts%20to%20develop%20the%20floodplains%2C%20i.e.%20the%20great%20colonisation%20of%20the%20Lower%20Warta%20River%20Valley%20%28the%20so-called%20Frederician%20colonisation%29%2C%20started%20during%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0Athe%20reign%20of%20the%20Prussian%20king%2C%20Frederick%20William%20I.%20This%20ruler%2C%20no%20longer%20able%20to%20carry%20out%20his%20plans%2C%20passed%20the%20work%20on%20to%20his%20son%2C%20Frederick%20II.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20descendant%20led%20to%20the%20development%20of%20new%20plans%2C%20continuing%20colonisation%20activities%20on%20a%20large%20scale.%20The%20great%20colonisation%20of%20the%20Warta%20River%20area%20was%20carried%20out%20between%201767%20and%201782.%20It%20was%20then%20that%20today%E2%80%99s%20Bogdaniec%20was%20established.%20In%201768%2C%20the%20first%20colonists%20built%2032%20half-timbered%20houses%2C%20covered%20with%20reeds.%20The%20village%20was%20named%20Du%CC%88ringshofen%20to%20commemorate%20the%20Prussian%20general%20who%20had%20distinguished%20himself%20in%20the%20Seven%20Years%E2%80%99%20War.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cp%3EIn%201945%2C%20as%20a%20result%20of%20the%20Second%20World%20War%2C%20the%20area%20along%20the%20lower%20Warta%20River%20once%20again%20became%20a%20part%20of%20Poland.%20The%20former%20inhabitants%2C%20the%20German%20population%2C%20left%20the%20area.%20It%20was%20settled%20by%20Poles%2C%20arriving%20mainly%20from%20the%20so-%20called%20Eastern%20Borderlands%20and%20Greater%20Poland%2C%20but%20also%20from%20various%20parts%20of%20Central%20Poland.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E
%3Cb%3EHISTORY%20OF%20THE%20UPPER%20MILL%20-click%20and%20find%20out%20more%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cdiv%20title%3D%22Page%2010%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%C2%A0%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20history%20of%20flour-milling%20in%20Bogdaniec%20is%20older%20than%20the%20village.%20According%20to%20Otto%20Kaplick%2C%20as%20early%20as%20in%201363%20there%20was%20a%20building%20on%20the%20Bogdanka%20River%20%28Mu%CC%88hlenflie%C3%9F%29%20referred%20to%20as%20the%20lower%20mill%20%28Untermu%CC%88hle%29%3B%20the%20nomenclature%20suggests%20the%20existence%20of%20an%20upper%20mill%20as%20well.%20There%20exists%20evidence%20for%20the%20operation%20of%20two%20mills%20in%20the%2016th%20century%3A%20one%2C%20the%20so-called%20new%20mill%2C%20belonged%20to%20the%20Brandenburg%20Elector%2C%20the%20other%20to%20the%20von%20Marwitz%20family.%20In%201795%20only%20one%20of%20them%20was%20still%20in%20operation.%20It%20is%20possible%20that%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20new%20upper%20mill%20was%20started%20at%20that%20time.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20upper%20mill%20is%20the%20oldest%20of%20the%20three%20surviving%20former%20watermills%20in%20Bogdaniec.%20Kurt%20Reissmann%20dated%20its%20construction%20to%201826.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cp%3EUntil%20February%201945%20the%20mill%20belonged%20to%20Richard%20Werk%20%28born%20on%2022%20May%201891%2C%20died%20on%2019%20September%201988%29.%20Richard%20was%20married%20to%20Elisabeth%2C%20ne%CC%81e%20Schroeder.%20They%20had%20three%20children%3A%20Ruth%20Anna%20Luisa%2C%20Maria%20Elisabeth%20and%20Fritz.%20They%20lived%20on%20the%20left%20side%20from%20the%20entrance%20to%20the%20building.%20The%20right%20side%20was%20occupied%20by%20the%20grandparents%3A%20Otto%20and%20Augusta%20%28ne%CC%81e%20Wolff%29%20Schroeder.%20In%201940%2C%20a%20prisoner%20of%20war%2C%20Jo%CC%81zef%20Rogozin%CC%81ski%2C%20was%20sent%20to%20the%20upper%20mill%20as%20a%20forced%20labourer.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cdiv%20title%3D%22Page%2018%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cp%3EFrom%20February%201945%20to%2019%20March%201946%2C%20the%20mill%20was%20occupied%20by%20the%20Soviet%20army.%20On%2021%20June%201945%2C%20the%20Werk%20family%20had%20to%20leave%20Bogdaniec%20and%20go%20to%20Germany.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cp%3EFrom%20March%201946%2C%20the%20mill%20was%20managed%20by%20Stanis%C5%82aw%20Solarski%20%28born%20on%2029%20February%201913%20in%20Markowce%2C%20Inowroc%C5%82aw%20District%29%2C%20who%20had%20been%20a%20manager%20of%20a%20mill%20in%20Kazimierz%20Biskupi%2C%20Konin%20District%2C%20before%20the%20war.%20He%20leased%20the%20mill%20until%2030%20September%201949.%20In%201950%2C%20the%20upper%20mill%20was%20taken%20over%20by%20the%20%E2%80%9CPeasants%E2%80%99%20Mutual%20Aid%E2%80%9D%20Communal%20Cooperative%2C%20and%20Stanis%C5%82aw%20Witczak%20became%20its%20administrator.%20From%201951%2C%20Wac%C5%82aw%20Fierkowicz%2C%20remembered%20in%20the%20Bogdaniec%20community%20as%20a%20conscientious%20%E2%80%9Emiller%E2%80%9D%2C%20worked%20in%20the%20mill.%20In%201958%20he%20became%20the%20manager%20of%20the%20mill.%20Also%20in%20that%20year%2C%20he%20moved%20in%20there%20with%20his%20family%2C%20thus%20occupying%20half%20of%20the%20residential%20part.%20The%20other%20half%20was%20occupied%20by%20the%20family%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0Aof%20Lucjan%20Rembas.%20It%20was%20here%20that%20speedway%20racer%20Jerzy%20Rembas%2C%20born%20on%2018%20April%201956%2C%20grew%20up%3B%20he%20was%20a%20representative%20of%20the%20Stal%20Gorzo%CC%81w%20club%20and%20one%20of%20the%20best%20Polish%20racers%20in%20the%201970s%20and%20early%201980s.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cp%3EOn%2010%20April%201984%2C%20the%20mill%20and%20the%20adjacent%20land%20became%20the%20property%20of%20the%20District%20Museum%20in%20Gorzo%CC%81w%20Wielkopolski.%20On%205%20August%201996%2C%20the%20first%20Bread%20Festival%20was%20held%20here.%20On%2028%20March%202019%2C%20a%20comprehensive%20renovation%20of%20the%20Mill%20Homestead%20began.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E
%3Cb%3ETHE%20MILLER%E2%80%99S%20DWELLING%20-click%20and%20find%20out%20more%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cdiv%20title%3D%22Page%2020%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%C2%A0%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cp%3EIn%20the%20old%20times%2C%20a%20miller%20belonged%20to%20the%20rural%20financial%20elite%3B%20he%20had%20incomparably%20higher%20material%20resources%20than%20the%20other%20villagers.%20The%20farm%2C%20the%20mainstay%20of%20most%20peasants%E2%80%99%20livelihoods%2C%20was%20for%20him%20only%20an%20additional%20source%20of%20income.%20Hence%2C%20the%20miller%E2%80%99s%20dwelling%20was%20also%20better%20furnished%20and%20equipped.%20The%20residential%20part%20of%20the%20upper%20mill%20in%20Bogdaniec%20comprised%20seven%20rooms.%20In%20the%20inter-war%20period%2C%20a%20two-generation%20family%20lived%20in%20the%20miller%E2%80%99s%20dwelling%3A%20the%20left%20side%20was%20occupied%20by%20the%20owner%20Richard%20Werk%20with%20his%20wife%20and%20three%20children%2C%20the%20right%20side%20by%20his%20in-laws%3A%20Otto%20and%20Augusta%20Schroeder.%20For%20many%20years%20after%20the%20war%20two%20families%20lived%20here%3A%20the%20Fierkowicz%20family%20and%20the%20Rembas%20family.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cdiv%20title%3D%22Page%2021%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cp%3ETo%20illustrate%20what%20the%20miller%E2%80%99s%20dwelling%20looked%20like%2C%20the%20following%20rooms%20have%20been%20reconstructed%3A%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cul%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cli%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cp%3Ea%20living%20room%20from%20the%20turn%20of%20the%2020th%20century%2C%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%09%3C%2Fli%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cli%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cp%3Ea%20kitchen%20with%20a%20chamber%20from%20the%20inter-war%20period%2C%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%09%3C%2Fli%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cli%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cp%3Ea%20bedroom%20and%20a%20bathroom%20from%20the%20turn%20of%20the%201940s%20and%201950s.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%09%3Cp%3EThe%20interior%20of%20the%20living%20room%20has%20been%20arranged%20as%20the%20living%20room%20of%20a%20wealthy%20landlord%20from%20the%20turn%20of%20the%2020th%20century.%20The%20furnishings%20have%20the%20character%20of%20a%20bourgeois%20household%20rather%20than%20the%20average%20country%20house%2C%20which%20is%20related%20to%20the%20aforementioned%20wealth%20of%20the%20inhabitants.%20A%20particularly%20noteworthy%20item%20is%20a%20wedding%20chair%20from%201823.%20In%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20room%2C%20there%20are%20an%20early%2020th%20century%20table%20and%20four%20chairs.%20A%20wardrobe%20with%20an%20extension%20and%20a%20Biedermeier-style%20wall%20mirror%2C%20dating%20from%20the%20time%20the%20upper%20mill%20was%20built%2C%20testify%20to%20the%20inhabitants%E2%80%99%20attachment%20to%20their%20ancestors%E2%80%99%20heritage.%20Against%20the%20wall%2C%20there%20is%20an%20early%2020th%20century%20sofa%2C%20while%20on%20the%20opposite%20side%20there%20is%20a%20secretary%20desk%20used%20for%20preparing%20and%20storing%20documentation%20and%20correspondence.%20From%20the%20living%20room%2C%20we%20move%20to%20the%20kitchen%20-%20the%20soul%20of%20the%20house%2C%20the%20centre%20of%20family%20life.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%09%3Cdiv%20title%3D%22Page%2022%22%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cp%3EThe%20arrangement%20is%20a%20reference%20to%20the%20inter-war%20period.%20We%20can%20find%20there%20a%20tiled%20kitchen%20stove%2C%20a%20kitchen%20sideboard%20with%20scales%2C%20moulds%20for%20yeast%20cakes%2C%20a%20tin%20container%20for%20bread%20and%20other%20items%20necessary%20for%20kitchen%20work%2C%20a%20table%20for%20washing%20dishes%2C%20and%20a%20table%20where%20the%20family%20ate%20meals%2C%20talked%20and%20spent%20their%20time.%20Connected%20to%20the%20kitchen%20is%20a%20chamber%2C%20used%20on%20a%20daily%20basis%20as%20a%20larder%2C%20a%20workshop%20and%20storage%20for%20kitchen%20and%20domestic%20utensils.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%09%3Cdiv%20title%3D%22Page%2022%22%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cdiv%3E%0D%0A%09%3Cp%3EFrom%20the%20kitchen%20we%20pass%20through%20the%20hallway%20to%20the%201950s%20bedroom%2C%20furnished%20with%20furniture%20from%20the%20period%20between%20the%20late%2019th%20century%20and%20the%20end%20of%20the%20inter-war%20period%2C%20found%20there%20by%20the%20new%20tenants.%20The%20room%20also%20serves%20as%20the%20children%E2%80%99s%20bedroom.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%09%3Cp%3EFrom%20the%20bedroom%20we%20enter%20the%20bathroom%2C%20or%20rather%20a%20hygiene%20nook%20with%20a%20washbasin%20on%20a%20stand%2C%20a%20lavatory%2C%20a%20chair%20with%20a%20lift%20seat%20and%20a%20hole%20%28serving%20as%20a%20portable%20toilet%29%2C%20a%20mirror%2C%20a%20bathtub.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%09%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%09%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%09%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%09%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%09%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%09%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%09%3C%2Fli%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Ful%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E
