Biographical note

Michel Quarez was born on 28 May 1938 in Damascus. In early 1940, his French family moved from Syria to Algeria, and following the end of the war to France. In the academic year 1956–1957, Quarez began studies at the École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux and continued them at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) in Paris, where he earned his diploma in 1961. Upon graduation, he was a scholarship holder in the studio of Henryk Tomaszewski in the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1961–1962). On returning to Paris, in 1964 he began collaboration with the Société Nouvelle d’Information et de Publicité (SNIP) as artistic director. Three years later he departed for New York, where he worked on drawings for the Mod Love comic book, with Michael Lutin as the script author; the commission came from the editor Dick Giordano. In 1968, during the May events, he lived in Paris in the centre of the Latin Quarter and published illustrations in extreme leftist magazines Action and Tout! In the early 1970s he was primarily interested in illustrations. Commissioned by various newspapers and magazines, he made drawings and comic strips (e.g. for Vogue, Marie Claire, La Nouvelle Critique, Esquire). In the mid-1970s he joined for a short time the French Grapus group, within which he made his first posters, commissioned by the French Communist Party (Parti communiste français, PCF). From the early 1980s onwards, he was experimenting with new graphic techniques, which together with the painter Michel Gaumnitz he extended by the creation of paintings using the computer software Soft Graph’8. In 1984, he received a grant from the French Ministry of Culture to develop graphic computer software. Between 1988 and 1992 he cooperated with the organisers of Salon International de l’Architecture in La Villette Park in Paris. In 1986, thanks to the initiative of Daniel Mollier-Sabé, Director of Communication of the City of Gennevilliers, he prepared the first of a series of posters promoting the city of Gennevilliers. As of 1987, he has implemented a number of projects for Saint-Denis near Paris, where he has lived and worked since 1976. Since the 1990s, he has regularly displayed his paintings during shows held under the name Ateliers ouverts in Saint-Denis, and his posters during the exhibitions in Echirolles, Chaumont and in Paris. Apart from posters, he designs illustrations and covers for various French magazines (e.g. L’Humanité, Révolution, Combat face au sida, Regards, Special). In 2003, he started collaboration with the French town of Bobigny on the outskirts of Paris, for which he designed a mural, wall decorations in the Pablo Neruda Hall and two poster series. Between 2007 and 2009, he made posters for the Paris Quartier d’été Festival. For a few years now he has displayed mainly his paintings during exhibitions.

Nota biograficzna

Michel Quarez urodził się 28 maja 1938 r. w Damaszku w rodzinie francuskiej, która na początku 1940 r. przeniosła się z Syrii do Algierii, a po zakończeniu wojny do Francji. W roku akademickim 1956–1957 rozpoczął studia w École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, a następnie kontynuował je w École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) w Paryżu, gdzie uzyskał dyplom w 1961 r. Po ukończeniu studiów skorzystał z możliwości odbycia stypendium w pracowni Henryka Tomaszewskiego w Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Warszawie (1961–1962). Po powrocie do Paryża, w 1964 r. rozpoczął współpracę z Société Nouvelle d’Information et de Publicité (SNIP) jako dyrektor artystyczny. Trzy lata później wyjechał do Nowego Jorku, gdzie od wydawcy Dicka Giordano otrzymał zamówienie na rysunki do komiksu Mod Love według scenariusza Michaela Lutina. W roku 1968, w trakcie wydarzeń majowych, mieszkał w Paryżu w centrum dzielnicy łacińskiej i publikował ilustracje w skrajnie lewicowych czasopismach „Action” i „Tout!”. W pierwszej połowie lat 70. zajmował się przede wszystkim ilustracją. Na zlecenie różnych gazet i magazynów wykonywał rysunki oraz krótkie komiksy (m.in. dla „Vogue”, „Marie Claire”, „La Nouvelle Critique”, „Esquire”). W połowie dekady przyłączył się na krótko do francuskiej grupy Grapus, w ramach której realizował swoje pierwsze pomysły plakatowe, projektując na zlecenia Francuskiej Partii Komunistycznej (Parti communiste français, PCF). Od początku lat 80. XX w. eksperymentował z nowymi technikami graficznymi, a później zaczął tworzyć obrazy za pomocą graficznego programu komputerowego Graph’8. W 1984 r., razem z Michelem Gaumnitzem, otrzymał grant francuskiego Ministerstwa Kultury na rozwijanie pracy w graficznych programach komputerowych. W latach 1988–1992 współpracował z organizatorami Salon International de l’Architecture na terenie parku La Villette w Paryżu. W 1986 r., dzięki inicjatywie Daniela Mollier-Sabé, dyrektora ds. komunikacji miasta Gennevilliers, przygotował pierwszy z serii plakatów dla miasta Gennevilliers. W latach 1987–2006 realizował wiele projektów dla podparyskiego Saint-Denis, gdzie mieszka i pracuje od 1976 r. Od lat 90. regularnie prezentuje swoje prace malarskie w ramach pokazów organizowanych pod nazwą „Ateliers ouverts” w Saint-Denis, a także plakaty na wystawach w Echirolles, Chaumont oraz w Paryżu. Poza plakatami projektuje ilustracje i okładki na zlecenia różnych czasopism francuskich (m.in. „L’Humanité”, „Révolution”, „Combat face au sida”, „Regards”, „Special”). W 2003 r. rozpoczął współpracę z podparyskim miastem Bobigny, dla którego zaprojektował mural, dekoracje ścienne w Sali Pablo Nerudy oraz dwie serie plakatów. W latach 2007–2009 realizował plakaty promujące festiwal „Paris Quartier d’été”. Od kilku lat na wystawach pokazuje głównie swoje prace malarskie.

Stylistyka tych prac, w których autor zaprezentował wyjątkowe umiejętności warsztatowe i kompozycyjne, wykracza daleko poza wyłącznie reklamowy charakter. / A comic made to order received from French publisher Robert Delpire for Citroën. Quarez returned to Paris from New York to work on the project and a several-page drawing comic book presenting the new car model Citroën Dyane came out in print in April 1968 in Citroën’s new quarterly. The style of these works, in which their author demonstrated his exceptional technique and composition skill, goes far beyond their purely advertising character.
