%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EMom%20Rachothai%20%28Mom%20Rajawongse%20Kratai%20Issarangkul%29%20%281820-1867%29%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AHis%20father%2C%20Prince%20Cha-um%2C%20had%20presented%20M.%20R.%20Kratai%20as%20an%20attendant%20to%20Prince%20Mongkut%20when%20the%20latter%20was%20still%20a%20monk.%20He%20became%20a%20close%20companion%20and%20participated%20in%20English%20classes%2C%20becoming%20very%20fluent.%20When%20Prince%20Mongkut%20ascended%20the%20throne%2C%20M.%20R.%20Kratai%20received%20the%20title%20of%20Mom%20Rachothai.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AIn%201857%2C%20he%20was%20sent%20as%20interpreter%20on%20the%20ambassadorial%20mission%20of%20Phraya%20Montri%20Suriyawongse%20%28Chum%20Bunnag%29%20to%20Queen%20Victoria.%20On%20his%20return%20he%20wrote%20an%20account%20in%20verse%20of%20his%20travels%20and%20in%201861%20sold%20the%20rights%20to%20Dr.%20Dan%20Beach%20Bradley%20for%20the%20sum%20of%20400%20baht%20%28a%20large%20amount%20at%20the%20time%29.%20This%20was%20the%20first%20sale%20of%20publishing%20rights%20in%20Thailand.
%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EMonk%20holding%20a%20fan%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EGrand%20Palace%2C%20Bangkok%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20fabric%20of%20the%20monk%E2%80%99s%20robe%20is%20woven%20with%20a%20diamond%20pattern%2C%20which%2C%20popular%20at%20the%20beginning%20of%20the%20Bangkok%20period%2C%20is%20no%20longer%20in%20use.%20Monks%E2%80%99%20robes%20consist%20of%20three%20pieces%20of%20cloth.%20The%20inner%20garments%20%28not%20visible%29%2C%20are%20the%20antarv%C4%81sa%20%28Thai%3A%20ungsa%29%20and%20uttar%C4%81sa%E1%B9%85ga%20%28Thai%3A%20sabong%29%2C%20while%20the%20outer%20garment%2C%20sa%E1%B9%83gh%C4%81ti%20%28Thai%3A%20jiworn%29%2C%20is%20wrapped%20around%20on%20top.%20Here%2C%20one%20shoulder%20is%20exposed%2C%20as%20is%20common%20when%20inside%20the%20temple%2C%20but%20during%20ceremonies%20both%20shoulders%20are%20usually%20covered.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AFans%20are%20part%20of%20a%20Buddhist%20monk%E2%80%99s%20paraphernalia%20and%20are%20held%20in%20front%20of%20the%20face%20during%20chanting.%20This%20particular%20fan%20is%20of%20a%20type%20presented%20by%20the%20king%20to%20those%20who%20had%20passed%20levels%203-9%20of%20Buddhist%20examinations%20equivalent%20to%20a%20university%20degree.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%C2%A0

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20Elephant%20Corral%2C%20Ayutthaya%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThis%20is%20where%20wild%20elephants%20were%20corralled%20in%20front%20of%20the%20King%20and%20other%20spectators.%20It%20fell%20into%20a%20ruinous%20state%20after%20the%20sack%20of%20the%20former%20capital%20in%201767%2C%20but%20was%20renovated%20during%20the%20reign%20of%20King%20Rama%20I%20and%20again%20during%20the%20reigns%20of%20King%20Rama%20III%20and%20King%20Rama%20V.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20corralling%20of%20wild%20elephants%20took%20place%20annually%2C%20but%20was%20also%20often%20organized%20for%20foreign%20dignatories.%20During%20the%20reign%20of%20King%20Rama%20V%2C%20an%20elephant%20corral%20was%20organised%20for%20the%20visit%20of%20Tsar%20Nicholas%20II%20in%201891%2C%20when%20he%20was%20still%20Tsarevitch%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20outer%20layer%20was%20for%20all%20the%20elephants%20before%20selection.%20Those%20who%20exhibited%20noble%20characteristics%20as%20listed%20in%20the%20Gaja%20Shastra%20%28Elephant%20Treatise%29%20were%20then%20taken%20to%20the%20inner%20enclosure%20created%20by%20hundreds%20of%20teak%20pillars.%20In%20the%20centre%20was%20a%20shrine%20to%20the%20elephant%20god%2C%20Ganesha.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThomson%20journeyed%20up%20river%20to%20Ayutthaya%20by%20steamboat%20together%20with%20three%20companions.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%C2%A0
%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EPhra%20Chom%20Klao%20Bridge%2C%20Phetchaburi%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThomson%20travelled%20to%20Phetchaburi%20by%20boat%20together%20with%20the%20Rev.%20Dan%20Beach%20Bradley.%20Their%20route%20took%20them%20via%20Klong%20Bangkok%20Yai%20and%20Klong%20Bang%20Luang%2C%20the%20Tha%20Chin%20River%20and%20the%20Mae%20Klong%20River%20to%20Samut%20Songkhram.%20From%20there%20they%20continued%20on%20horseback%20to%20visit%20Phra%20Nakhon%20Khiri%20Palace%2C%20with%20six%20people%20being%20needed%20to%20carry%20the%20photographic%20equipment.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20bridge%20crossing%20the%20Phetchaburi%20river%20was%20built%20at%20the%20beginning%20of%20King%20Mongkut%E2%80%99s%20reign.%20At%20first%20it%20was%20known%20as%20Hua%20Chang%20bridge%20%28Elephant%20Head%E2%80%99s%20bridge%29%2C%20but%20later%20the%20local%20populace%20changed%20the%20name%20to%20honour%20the%20king%2C%20who%20was%20particularly%20fond%20of%20Phetchaburi%20and%20liked%20to%20come%20and%20stay%20in%20his%20hilltop%20palace.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%C2%A0
%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EOarsman%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20background%20of%20sugar%20cane%20and%20a%20thatched%20dwelling%20suggest%20the%20photograph%20was%20taken%20during%20Thomson%E2%80%99s%20trip%20to%20Phetchaburi.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0ADuring%20the%20reign%20of%20King%20Mongkut%20waterborne%20transport%20was%20very%20popular%20and%20many%20new%20canals%20were%20dug.%20Settlements%20grew%20up%20along%20waterways%20with%20markets%20developing%20where%20canals%20entered%20the%20main%20river.%20The%20major%20canals%20dug%20by%20Chinese%20labourers%20in%20this%20reign%20were%20Padung%20Krung%20Kasem%2C%20Hualampong%2C%20Maha%20Sawat%20and%20Pasi%20Charoen.%20These%20were%20able%20to%20take%20steamboats%20carrying%20rice%20and%20served%20as%20a%20means%20of%20public%20transport.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%C2%A0
