Since time immemorial, a promontory has formed south of Himmelfahrt near Oberbozen; this geographical feature is known in German as the “Spornberg.”In 1311, Duchess Euphemia of Kärnten-Tyrol had the estate built there and granted it to the knight Franz from Bozen as his ancestral seat; his family henceforth bore the name “von Sparrenberg.”1470: Granting of a coat of arms to Ludwig and Christoph von SparrenbergIn 1473, Christoph von Sparrenberg sold the ancestral estate of Sparrenberg to Leonhard von Völs.With Christoph von Sparrenberg, the male line—which was still significant at the time—died out. The Lords of Völs soon entrusted the estate to the care of farming families.Since then, it is no longer the people who bear the coat of arms, but the place itself!
