Pontius Pilate sentences Jesus to death
Typology: painting, oil on panelThe procession begins by recalling the moment when the Sanhedrin, the court of the Jews, condemned Jesus to death for declaring himself King of the Jews and Son of God. This decision was endorsed by Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect who ruled Palestine and who, in order not to make the decision himself, delegated the responsibility for the declaration of condemnation to others. The judges also decreed that the execution would take place by crucifixion, a torture that was reserved for hardened thieves and murderers to give a long and painful death.

The Via Crucis
In the second half of the XIX century. the interior of the Sanctuary has been enriched with paintings describing the 14 stations of the Via Crucis (from the Latin, Via della Croce - also called Via Dolorosa) which reconstructs and commemorates the painful journey of Jesus Christ, his condemnation, torture and finally the killing on Golgotha.
