The Bagnols fires

1st fire: On the night of June 25-26, 1830: the church framework and the presbytery were destroyed. Repairs were carried out from 1835 to 1841.

2nd fire: September 8, 1895. 32 thatched houses destroyed, major damage to the church, the bell tower and the presbytery, loss of 400,000F, 110 people homeless. Four children and the mother of two of them perished in the flames. The fire started in the Papon-Mazeyrat house, a 10-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, the Montel-Picard family: 2 children and their mother. A subscription is opened to help the needy, many will go begging on the roads.

It was Sunday, September 8, 1895, around noon. Hearing the call "Fire!" Mrs. Montel-Picard rushed out of the church: her two children were alone at home. The house was already engulfed in flames. They tried to hold back the distraught mother... in vain. But she had barely crossed the door when the roof collapsed, burying her and her two little ones.
The fire resulted in 5 victims, 31 burned houses, 110 homeless, losses of almost 500,000 francs and a town reduced to half its size. It is said that the fire had started in an attic, or that a frying pan had spread it to a chimney. But those responsible for the disaster were the hornbeam roofs, the crushing heat that had reigned for several days and the compactness of the town which facilitated the spread of the blaze.
This is why, more than a century later, the centre of Bagnols has hardly any houses dating from before the disaster. But its church has gained a new spire and new bells - the previous ones having melted - and no doubt the people of Bagnols have acquired the hard way, in this sad affair, a certain wisdom: according to the press of the time, none of the destroyed houses were insured.
