%3Cb%3ECHAPEL%20COMMUNION%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%C2%A0%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20current%20chapel%20of%20the%20Communion%2C%20circular%2C%20was%20%C2%A0built%20in%20the%20eighteenth%20century%20to%20give%20the%20communion%20to%20the%20faithful%20on%20it.%20The%20chapel%20of%20the%20Communion%20is%20accessed%20by%20two%20%C2%A0rectangular%20doors%20open%20in%20the%20original%20Roman%20wall.%20Built%2C%20therefore%2C%20outside%20%C2%A0the%20precincts%20of%20the%20temple%2C%20is%20located%20in%20a%20portion%20of%20the%20courtyard%20of%20the%20%3Cem%3EManor%20of%20Xelm%C3%ADrez%3C%2Fem%3E.%20%C2%A0Above%20the%20first%20door%20there%20are%20angels%20holding%20%C2%A0the%20arms%20of%20Mendoza%2C%20whose%20lineage%20belonged%20the%20Archbishop%20Don%20Lope%2C%20who%20order%20%C2%A0to%20build%20the%20chapel%20in%20the%20mid-fifteenth%20century.%20The%20original%20chapel%20was%20named%20%C2%A0Our%20Lady%20of%20Atonement.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0ABetween%20the%20sixteenth%20and%20eighteenth%20centuries%2C%20the%20%C2%A0titles%20of%20master%20degree%20and%20PhD%20from%20the%20University%20of%20Santiago%20were%20presented%20%C2%A0in%20this%20chapel.%20To%20the%20right%20is%20the%20urn%20containing%20the%20remains%20of%20Archbishop%20%C2%A0Rajoy%20y%20Losada.%3C%2Fp%3E
%3Cb%3ECHAPEL%20OF%20MONDRAG%C3%93N%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20chapel%20named%20Mondragon%20receives%20its%20name%20from%20the%20canon%20%C2%A0Juan%20de%20Mondragon%2C%20who%20was%20built%20in%20the%20sixteenth%20century%20in%20flamboyant%20style.%20%C2%A0It%20is%20closed%20by%20a%20valuable%20fence%20cast%20in%20the%20town%20of%20Mondragon%20%28Guipuzcoa%29.%20In%20the%20central%20altar%20there%20is%20an%20altarpiece%2C%20made%20of%20%C2%A0terracotta%2C%20which%20represents%20the%20%3Cem%3ECompianto%20sul%20Cristo%20morto%3C%2Fem%3E.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AIt%20is%20also%20known%2C%20as%20chapel%20of%20the%20Piety%2C%20due%20to%20the%20%C2%A0relief%20of%20the%20Our%20Lady%20of%20Sorrows%20on%20its%20main%20altar%2C%20carved%20in%20Rome%20on%20lava%20of%20%C2%A0Vesuvius%2C%20and%20as%20chapel%20of%20Saint%20Cruz%2C%20because%20the%20patronage%20depends%20on%20the%20%C2%A0Marquis%20of%20Santa%20Cruz.
%3Cb%3ECHAPEL%20OF%20SAINT%20PETER%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20chapel%20receives%20several%20names%3A%20of%20Saint%20Peter%2C%20honoring%20the%20first%20leader%20of%20the%20Catholic%20Church%2C%20of%20Mencia%20de%20Andrade%2C%20whose%20tomb%20is%20in%20the%20right%20wall%2C%20of%20the%20%3Cem%3EAzucena%3C%2Fem%3E%2C%20because%20of%20the%20image%20of%20the%20Virgin%20which%20is%20found%20at%20the%20altarpiece%2C%20or%20of%20the%20%3Cem%3EMagistral%2C%20%3C%2Fem%3Ebecause%20he%20was%20the%20person%20taking%20care%20of%20it.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AIt%20is%20located%20next%20to%20the%20Holy%20Door%20and%20is%20inside%20the%20%C2%A0early%20Romanesque%20apse%20maintaining%20its%20original%20structure.%20There%20is%20buried%20%C2%A0Mencia%20de%20Andrade%2C%20who%20paid%20the%20expenses%20of%20the%20chapel%20in%20the%20sixteenth%20%C2%A0century.%20From%20this%20period%20are%20the%20murals%20that%20appeared%20during%20the%20restoration%20%C2%A0of%201998.
%3Cb%3ECHAPEL%20OF%20THE%20HOLY%20SPIRIT%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%C2%A0%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20Chapel%20of%20the%20Holy%20Spirit%2C%20also%20called%20of%20the%20Solitude%2C%20has%20an%20elongated%20plant%20and%20was%20built%20in%20the%20thirteenth%20century%20in%20Gothic%20style%20by%20order%20of%20Pedro%20Vidal.%20He%20commissioned%20the%20twelve%20chaplains%20who%20composed%20the%20collegiate%20of%20Holy%20Spirit%20to%20take%20care%20of%20it%2C%20hence%20its%20name.%20One%20century%20later%20was%20extended%20by%20the%20Archdeacon%20Gonzalo%20P%C3%A9rez%20de%20Moscoso.%20It%20is%20linked%2C%20therefore%2C%20with%20the%20Moscoso%20family%2C%20whose%20arms%20top%20the%20front%2C%20and%20there%20is%20buried%2C%20among%20others%2C%20Bishop%20Moscoso%2C%20whose%20tomb%20is%20surrounded%20by%20sixteenth-century%20wall%20paintings%20representing%20the%20Descent.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AIt%20highlights%20are%20seven%20coffins%2C%20six%20of%20which%20are%20adorned%20with%20seated%20statues%2C%20containing%20the%20remains%20of%20important%20figures%3A%20the%20founder%2C%20Pedro%20Vidal%2C%20besides%20the%20altar%2C%20the%20tomb%20of%20Archbishop%20Alonso%20Sanchez%20de%20Moscoso%2C%20one%20of%20the%20few%20preserved%20with%20medieval%20origin%2C%20the%20Cardinal%20Pedro%20Varela%2C%20to%20the%20right%20of%20the%20entrance%2C%20or%20Chantre%20Melgarejo%2C%20to%20left%20of%20it%2C%20with%20bas-reliefs.%20The%20cathedral%20architect%20Fernando%20de%20Casa%20y%20Novoa%20was%20buried%20in%20this%20chapel%2C%20although%20without%20mausoleum%20or%20inscription%20to%20remember%20it.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AAt%20the%20main%20altar%20there%20is%20an%20image%20of%20the%20Solitude%20of%20Mary%2C%20from%20the%20seventeenth%20century.%3C%2Fp%3E
%3Cb%3EHOLY%20DOOR%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%C2%A0%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20Holy%20Door%2C%20or%20Door%20of%20Forgiveness%2C%20only%20opens%20during%20Holy%20Years.%20On%20the%2031th%20December%20preceding%20the%20beginning%20of%20the%20jubilee%20year%20is%20demolished%20the%20wall%20in%20front%20of%20the%20door%2C%20which%20stays%20open%20until%20the%20year%20ends.%20Next%20to%20the%20Holy%20Door%20are%20the%20offices%20where%20the%20pilgrims%20receive%20the%20Compostela.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AIt%20was%20opened%20first%20time%20in%20the%20seventeenth%20century%2C%20because%20the%20basilica%20gets%20by%20this%20time%20the%20Jubilee%20privilege.%20Thus%2C%20the%20Romanesque%20wall%20was%20drilled%20to%20communicate%20the%20cathedral%20with%20the%20monastery%20of%20Saint%20Paio%20de%20Antealtares%2C%20which%20mark%20the%20%3Cem%3EPlaza%20de%20la%20Quintana%3C%2Fem%3E%20out.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20Holy%20Door%20highlights%20are%20twenty-four%20Romanesque%20seated%20statues%2C%20from%20the%20original%20chorus%2C%20by%20the%20%3Cem%3EMaestro%20Mateo%3C%2Fem%3E%2C%20which%20was%20dismantled.%20They%20were%20attached%20to%20this%20wall%20on%20the%20seventeenth%20century.%20They%20represent%20prophets%2C%20patriarchs%20and%20apostles.%20At%20the%20top%2C%20within%20some%20niches%2C%20they%20placed%20the%20statues%20of%20Santiago%20and%20his%20disciples%20Theodosius%20and%20Athanasius.%20At%20the%20low%20part%2C%20there%20are%20some%20of%20the%20ancient%20tombs%20of%20canons%2C%20without%20a%20headstone.%20Through%20it%20you%20reach%20a%20small%20courtyard%20and%20behind%20it%2C%20the%20real%20Holy%20Door%2C%20through%20where%20you%20can%20enter%20to%20the%20apse%20of%20the%20cathedral.%3C%2Fp%3E
%3Cb%3ECENTRAL%20NAVE%20AND%20MAESTRO%20MATEO%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20%C2%A0nave%2C%20from%20east%20to%20west%2C%20rises%2024%20metres%20high%20and%20is%209.74%20metres%20wide.%20The%20two%20%C2%A0aisles%20are%20narrower%20following%20the%20model%20of%20the%20pilgrimage%20churches%2C%20which%20the%20%C2%A0cathedral%20is%20part%20of..%20It%20%C2%A0is%20topped%20by%20smooth%20edges%20vaults%2C%20except%20those%20of%20the%20ambulatory.%20Above%20the%20%C2%A0minor%20naves%2C%20all%20around%20the%20basilica%2C%20a%20gallery%3A%20the%20stand.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20representation%20of%20Maestro%20%C2%A0Mateo%2C%20popularly%20known%20as%20%3Cem%3ESanto%20dos%20%C2%A0Croques%3C%2Fem%3E%2C%20is%20at%20the%20bottom%20and%20the%20back%20part%20of%20the%20mullion%20of%20the%20Portico%20de%20la%20Gloria.%20The%20image%20of%20%C2%A0Maestro%20Mateo%20is%20kneeling%20in%20devout%20attitude%20toward%20the%20altar%20of%20the%20cathedral%2C%20%C2%A0and%20carries%20a%20parchment%20in%20his%20hand%20in%20which%20there%20is%20%C2%A0the%20inscription%20Architectus%20%28architect%29.A%20popular%20belief%20holds%20that%2C%20%C2%A0hitting%20your%20own%20head%20against%20the%20statue%20makes%20you%20get%20some%20of%20his%20wisdom%20hence%20%C2%A0its%20designation%20as%20%3Cem%3ESanto%20dos%20Croques%20%C2%A0%28Saint%20of%20head%20butts%29%3C%2Fem%3E.%20The%20rite%20of%20head%20butts%20comes%2C%20according%20to%20some%20explanations%2C%20%C2%A0from%20Compostela%20University%20students%2C%20who%20ask%20for%20intelligence%20and%20memory%20to%20the%20%C2%A0Maestro%20Mateo%20at%20exam%20time.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0ASince%202008%2C%20the%20space%20around%20%C2%A0the%20figure%20has%20been%20limited%2C%20preventing%20visitors%20to%20perform%20this%20rite%2C%20in%20%C2%A0response%20to%20the%20deterioration%20in%20the%20mullion%20and%20being%20considered%20by%20the%20%C2%A0Santiago%20cathedral%20chapter%20as%20a%20tradition%20devoid%20of%20religious%20content.
%3Cb%3ECHAPEL%20OF%20OUR%20LADY%20OF%20THE%20WHITE%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20Chapel%20of%20Our%20Lady%20the%20White%20is%20also%20called%20%3Cem%3Eof%20the%20Espa%C3%B1as%3C%2Fem%3E%2C%20because%20of%20the%20surname%20of%20its%20founder%2C%20Juan%20de%20Espa%C3%B1a.%20Its%20original%20%C2%A0structure%20dates%2C%20therefore%2C%20from%20the%20fifteenth%20century.%20It%20was%20built%20on%20an%20%C2%A0irregular%20plan%20with%20groin%20vault%2C%20whose%20nerves%20are%20supported%20on%20decorated%20cantilevers.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20current%20altarpiece%20is%20neo-Gothic%2C%20from%201906%2C%20and%20%C2%A0is%20chaired%20by%20the%20image%20of%20Our%20Lady%20the%20White%2C%20which%20gives%20its%20name%20to%20the%20%C2%A0chapel.%20On%20the%20entrance%20arch%20there%20is%20one%20of%20the%20crosses%20of%20%C2%A0consecration%20of%20the%20cathedral%2C%20dating%20from%20the%20thirteenth%20century.
%3Cb%3ECHAPEL%20OF%20OUR%20LADY%20OF%20THE%20PILLAR%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20chapel%20of%20Pillar%2C%20the%20largest%20of%20the%20cathedral%2C%20%C2%A0takes%20up%20the%20space%20of%20the%20fifth%20apse%20of%20the%20ambulatory%20and%20the%20first%20of%20the%20transept%2C%20%C2%A0both%20missing%20and%20where%20before%20were%20the%20chapels%20of%20St.%20Andrew%20and%20St.%20Martin%20or%20%C2%A0St.%20Fructuosus.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20chapel%20is%20open%20to%20worship%20in%20the%20eighteenth%20%C2%A0century%2C%20has%20a%20mixed%20ornamentation%20made%20out%20of%20rich%20materials%20%28marble%20and%20jasper%2C%20etc.%29.%20Its%20marble%20altar%20contains%20an%20Our%20Lady%20of%20the%20Pillar%20niche%2C%20to%20whom%20is%20%C2%A0dedicated%20the%20chapel.%20Close%20to%20her%20feet%2C%20kneeling%2C%20there%20is%20an%20image%20of%20the%20%C2%A0Apostle%20Santiago.%20From%20the%20Churrigueresque%20dome%20hangs%20a%20large%20iron%20chandelier.
%3Cb%3ECHAPEL%20OF%20THE%20SAVIOR%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%C2%A0%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20chapel%20of%20the%20Savior%2C%20located%20at%20the%20apse%2C%20is%20the%20best%20preserved%20of%20the%20Romanesque%20chapels.%20Because%20of%20its%20location%2C%20it%20is%20considered%20that%20the%20Cathedral%20construction%20began%20there%20and%2C%20as%20the%20chapel%20of%20Saint%20Peter%2C%20it%20has%20kept%20its%20old%20appearance.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AAlso%20called%20the%20chapel%20of%20the%20King%20of%20France%2C%20because%20of%20the%20donations%20the%20monarchs%20Charles%20V%20and%20Louis%20XI%20of%20France%20did%20to%20the%20Cathedral%2C%20and%20as%20well%20chapel%20of%20Mary%20Magdalene%2C%20because%20of%20an%20effigy%20of%20this%20Saint%2C%20which%20was%20in%20it%2C%20donated%20by%20Charles%20V%20the%20Wise%2C%20King%20of%20France.%20Its%20construction%20began%20in%20the%20eleventh%20century%2C%20during%20the%20reign%20of%20Alfonso%20and%20the%20bishop%20of%20Diego%20Xelm%C3%ADrez%2C%20as%20indicated%20on%20the%20inscription%20on%20the%20door%3A%20%22We%20started%20this%20work%20at%20the%20Prelate%20Diego%20time%2C%20reigning%20Prince%20Alfonso.%22%20There%20is%20a%20Plateresque%20polychrome%20marble%20altarpiece%2C%20dating%20from%20the%20sixteenth%20century%20and%20is%20chaired%20by%20a%20Gothic%20image%20of%20the%20Savior%20showing%20his%20wounds%2C%20which%20gives%20its%20name%20to%20the%20chapel.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20pilgrims%20received%20in%20this%20chapel%20the%20%3Cem%3ECompostela%3C%2Fem%3E%2C%20a%20documentary%20proof%20of%20the%20pilgrimage%2C%20and%20the%20%3Cem%3ELingualleiros%3C%2Fem%3E%20to%20those%20priests%20who%20know%20several%20languages.%3C%2Fp%3E
%3Cb%3ECHAPEL%20OF%20%20SAINT%20CATHERINE%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0ALocated%20next%20to%20the%20%C2%A0Azabacher%C3%ADa%20door%2C%20the%20chapel%20of%20Saint%20Catherine%20takes%20the%20original%20location%20of%20%C2%A0the%20Royal%20Pantheon%2C%20moved%20in%20the%20sixteenth%20century%20to%20the%20current%20Chapel%20of%20the%20%C2%A0Relics.%20The%20chapel%20is%20a%20modest%20%C2%A0Greco-Roman%20altar%20placed%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20nave%2C%20where%20Saint%20Catherine%20and%20Our%20%C2%A0Lady%20of%20Lourdes%20are%20venerated.%20In%20a%20room%2C%20part%20of%20a%20closed%20%C2%A0corridor%20which%20communicated%20with%20the%20Chapel%20of%20the%20Communion%2C%20is%20the%20equestrian%20%C2%A0figure%20for%20processions%20of%20St.%20James.
%3Cb%3ECHAPEL%20OF%20SAINT%20BARTHOLOMEW%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20chapel%20of%20St.%20Bartholomew%20is%20the%20first%20of%20the%20five%20%C2%A0primitive%20apse%20chapels.%20It%20also%20received%20the%20name%20of%20Holy%20Faith.%20It%20was%20modified%20in%20the%20sixteenth%20century%20because%20of%20the%20%C2%A0installation%2C%20near%20the%20entrance%2C%20on%20the%20left%20wall%2C%20of%20the%20Plateresque%20tomb%20of%20%C2%A0Diego%20de%20Castilla%2C%20grandson%20of%20the%20Castilian%20King%20Peter%20I%20the%20Cruel%2C%20portrayed%20%C2%A0in%20the%20recumbent%20figure.%20From%20the%20original%20chapel%20are%20preserved%20the%20Romanesque%20%C2%A0windows%2C%20although%20changed%20and%20deformed%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20altar%2C%20built%20of%20marble%2C%20is%20also%20a%20Plateresque%20%C2%A0sixteenth%20century%20work%20and%20there%20we%20find%20the%20images%20of%20Our%20Lady%20of%20Good%20%C2%A0Counsel%2C%20Santiago%20pilgrim%20and%20San%20Bartholomew%2C%20which%20gives%20its%20name%20to%20the%20%C2%A0chapel%2C%20chained%20to%20the%20devil.
%3Cb%3ECONCEPTION%20CHAPEL%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%C2%A0%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20Chapel%20of%20the%20Conception%20is%20also%20called%20the%20Chapel%20of%20Prima%2C%20due%20to%20it%20belongs%20originally%20to%20the%20Confraternity%20of%20Clergy%20of%20Prima%20that%20serves%20the%20cathedral.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AIt%20was%20built%20in%20the%20sixteenth%20century%20by%20order%20of%20the%20canon%20Antonio%20Rodriguez%2C%20who%20rests%20in%20the%20tomb%20with%20recumbent%20Renaissance%20on%20the%20right%20wall.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20front%20is%20plateresque%20and%20the%20interior%20is%20late%20Gothic.%20On%20the%20altar%20of%20the%20chapel%20you%20can%20see%20the%20exterior%20stones%20of%20the%20first%20Romanesque%20apse.%20The%20churrigueresco%20altarpiece%20consists%20of%20two%20altars%2C%20with%20the%20image%20of%20the%20Immaculate%20Conception%2C%20in%20stone%2C%20and%20wooden%20relief%20to%20the%20Deposition.%20The%20chapel%20is%20lighted%20by%20a%20window%20that%20represents%2C%20like%20the%20altar%2C%20the%20Immaculate%20Conception.%3C%2Fp%3E
