The Vickers Machine Gun

The Vickers Machine Gun was an improved version of the Maxim gun that had been in widespread use before the introduction of the Vickers and for some time, in many armies, the two guns served alongside one another.

The Vickers Machine Gun was used in many variants by the British and Commonwealth and many other forces around the World.

The guns that saw service with the British, and Commonwealth, were those listed below. These are followed by the Commercial models, then those other models.

Manuals
One of the objects of the VMGCRA is to disseminate information relating to the Vickers and how it was used.  With the extensive collection of original manuals and paperwork within the collection, there is a wealth of information available.  These pages provide low-resolution scans of the majority of the manuals available, including publishing variations and different editions wherever possible.

High-resolution images of individual pages are available on request and full manuals in high-resolution are available for purchase on DVD, as part of a disc with all of the manuals from that period.

Book a visit
The collection is extensive and does cover the use of the Vickers MG in considerable depth, rather than the breadth of a ‘normal’ weapons collection of museum. As of October 2021, we have 24 Vickers MGs (of various types) in the collection. It is possible to handle and photograph items from the collection, within some constraints for security and safety, and the collection can accommodate individuals through to groups of up to 20 people.

A routine visit is likely to last about two to three hours but can be expanded if necessary. It can also incorporate a presentation on the growth of the collection and the development and use of the machine gun and machine gunnery as a tactic. This can be adapted depending on any specific period or use of interest.

Safety

The Vickers MG Collection & Research Association is a professional organisation that uses firearms in its everyday activities. As such, we need to operate in a safe manner that is demonstrated to be current and competent.

We hold a range of insurances that cover the activities, products and information we provide. Our members all act voluntarily yet are covered as if they were full employees.

We operate with a safety management system in place, fully risk-assessing and managing the activities we undertake. We recognise that historical weapons, such as the Vickers MG, are not something people are always familiar with and that the safety precautions written for their original use may not meet modern standards and be written for users who were more familiar with and better trained than the majority of people who come into contact with these weapons today.
